UNITED SIKHS AID Philippines Relief Effort
Tacloban � As many as 10,000 people are feared dead in one city alone after Super Typhoon Haiyan � one of the most powerful storms ever recorded � slammed into the central islands of the Philippines, officials said. The storm surge caused sea waters to rise 20 feet when Typhoon Haiyan hit on November 8th, 2013. Hundreds and thousands have been displaced and lost access to basic necessities of daily living.
Originated from the eastern Pacific Ocean, Typhoon Haiyan took its toll on the island nation especially on the eastern coastline. The city of Tacloban and nearby areas have been flooded with water and powerful winds with more than 150km per hours ripped the city.
On Samar Island, which is facing Tacloban, Leo Dacaynos of the provincial disaster office said Sunday that 300 people were confirmed dead in Basey town and another 2,000 are missing.There are still other towns on Samar that have not been reached, he said, and appealed for food and water. Power was knocked out and there was no cellphone signal, making communication possible only by radio.
If the typhoon death toll is confirmed, it would be the deadliest natural catastrophe on record in the Philippines.
UNITED SIKHS has initiated the Ghanaia Philippines Relief Effort and is working to gather resources and build a team of volunteers, including medical professionals, to send to the Philippines.
