Statement by Congressman Joseph Crowley
New York, NY - US Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens & the Bronx) today issued the following statement. Congressman Crowley's district includes the neighborhood of Jackson Heights, which has a large Sikh community. Rep. Crowley is a former co-chair of the Caucus on India and Indian Americans, and currently serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs."The Sikh community is an important part of New York and an important part of our nation's diverse cultural fabric. Any acts of intolerance against any community should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
"The very reason we have Hate Crime laws in New York is to effectively punish criminal abuse against individuals over differences of ethnicity, race, religion and sexual orientation. "Enforcing these laws sends a clear message that these criminal acts are taken very seriously by authorities and are deemed unacceptable in our society."
