Human Rights First will continue to serve the Haitian community by providing pro bono representation for asylum-seekers. Those who need assistance of this kind can walk-in (9:00am-5:30pm) and fill out a request for legal assistance at our reception desk. Alternatively, those in immigration proceedings at 26 Federal Plaza can stop by the “pro bono room” on the 12th Floor and meet with a screener from the Immigration Representation Project (IRP), and the asylum-seekers will be contacted by Human Rights First for an appointment in our office. We also meet with those in detention at the Elizabeth Detention Center for potential representation. We are discussing whether to expand our work to also handle Haitian TPS. One important factor is the extent to which other local organizations are meeting the need.
