Sikh NGO to send relief shipment to Myanmar

JALANDHAR: As some Sikh organizations have started serving langar to the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, United Sikhs, the NGO that has joined hands with Yangon Sikh Gurdwara and Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, to collect essential food, water and medical supplies, announced that it will ship 16 containers carrying 500 tonnes of food and medical supplies to the affected country from Malaysia.

The organization's representatives said the NGO had expanded aid to areas like Shawe Pauk Kan, Dalat, Kyau Tan, Kun Changon, Kaut Maue, Dagon Seik Kan and the volunteers were serving hot meals to survivors in make-shift camps. "Since we started providing langar on May 16 more than 15,000 meals have been served," said the NGO's director, Kuldip Singh.He said two volunteers from New Delhi had joined the relief team in Yagnon, and the organization intended to expand its efforts in Myanmar. Tejpaul Kaur, a volunteer of the organization, said people required food and clothing immediately in order to survive.
