UNITED SIKHS recommends ‘Journey with the Gurus,’ a children’s book designed to empower and educate Sikh children. A welcome addition to your homes and a must for elementary school libraries

Atlanta GA: UNITED SIKHS has added ‘Journey with the Gurus’ in its recommendation list for Sikh Awareness Through Libraries (SATL) project and highly recommends adding it to your household and as a gift to your family and school libraries.

Journey with the Gurus, Volume One, is a children’s book based on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak. Each story is woven in an easy to understand language – that captures the imagination of young minds. The added features of this book are the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. These questions create shared learning and meaningful conversations. The aim of the book is to encourage dialogue between parents and children. Sixty beautiful original illustrations in rich, vibrant colors make the stories come to life. This hard-cover book has been esthetically designed and can be passed from generation to generations.

This book is fundamentally changing the way young children are associating with Guru Nanak. Because this book is dialogue oriented, it helps in transporting the children to the time and space of Guru Nanak. The children can feel Guru Nanak as a companion and as a friend. And that helps them absorb the ideals of the Sikh way of life in a non-preachy and logical way.
Journey with the Gurus has replaced the Disney’s bed time stories in many Sikh households. Children are asking their parents to read to them these awe-inspiring stories.
These stories are inspired by the Balam Sakhian of Bhai Vir Singh, and are retold by Inni Kaur who has been involved in educating Sikh children for decades.
It is a perfect family time activity by the fireplace or a perfect fit for the Sunday Gurmat school story-telling session.

This book makes an ideal gift for the children’s elementary school libraries on the occasion of Gur Purabs or Vaisakhi day.

Reviews of  ‘Journey with the Gurus’:

“Journey with the Gurus” is one of the very few Sikh books that is engaging, insightful and a delight to read both for the children and their parents. Written in a conversation style, the book creates a bond between Guru Nanak and the reader that is playful, yet conveys the message that inspires the mind and the soul.

Events from the Guru’s life, his interaction with his parents and sister – all come to life in a language that is fresh, insightful and intriguing. Inni Kaur uses metaphors that relate these stories that we have heard since our childhood, in a 21st century context. She is gifted in retelling these Saakhis of the Gurus in a medium that combines realism, drama, history and moral sensibility that instructs and informs the young mind with a sense of wonder and pride. The exercises at the end of chapters are perfect for expanding the mind and ensuring that the children engage in a healthy conversation about how the teachings of the Gurus can be contextualized to their current life. All in all, the book is a delightful work that the children or adult readers can love and grow in compassion and understanding.”

“What I appreciate most about this book is how engaged our children were while reading it - whether it was the beautiful illustrations that kept our little ones sneaking a peek into the next page or the discussions we had afterwards that would go on past bedtime. It was that little personal connection they created with Guru Nanak that I found so special.”
